A group of teachers opened Li Yang Education in Greater Vancouver on a student-first idea of what a classroom should be. What the first cohorts got was hard to buy locally then: certified local teachers, in small groups, working on exactly the subject a student was losing ground in.
We built the StudyPug platform because teaching and technology belong together. For a student it meant help at eleven at night before an exam instead of a wait until the next lesson, and every tutoring student since has had a practice bank sitting behind their homework.
CELPIP arrived as Canada's own English test and adults had no settled way through it. We founded CELPIP Test Prep, took official partner status and hand-picked the instructors, so a parent could prepare properly rather than guess at the format.
IELTS and CAEL followed. Students leaving for university abroad and families opening an immigration file no longer had to go elsewhere to find the exam course they needed.
Li Yang Education became StudyPug Learning and the brands came under one company. For a family it meant one relationship instead of four: Grade 8 math, AP, the university application and a parent's own English, handled by people who already know the student.
StudyPug Learning(formerly Li Yang Education), CELPIP Test Prep, StudyPug Learning English, StudyPug Learning IELTS, StudyPug Learning CAEL and the StudyPug.com online learning system joined the group one at a time between 2001 and 2021, in the order families came to need them: K-12 tutoring first, then the platform, then adult English.
opened in 2014 and changed what a tutoring student had between lessons. It covers Math, Physics, Chemistry and Economics from elementary grades to first-year university, AP and IB included, at any hour of the day. A million students have used it since, and Canadian school boards adopted it.
began as the original Li Yang Education, the tutoring brand founded by a group of teachers as the authentic Li Yang Education. For its first thirteen years this was the whole company, and it still carries the largest share of students - Grade 1 to university, in English tutoring, math and science tutoring, computer programming, AP course training and IB support, exam and contest preparation and academic planning. Small-group classes and 1-to-1 tutoring with certified teachers: the format the school opened with in 2001 and has kept since.
Added for the parents who started asking for lessons of their own. Canadian instructors, material drawn from daily life here, and no exam at the end. No previous English study is needed to start.
Founded in 2018 as the CELPIP test was rolled out, and among the first schools in the country to teach it. Official partner status came with it, along with the earliest complete CELPIP online class system, CLB specialists, an extensive CELPIP practice bank and the technique bank that a decade of teaching produced, on our own online system and taught by local instructors - nearly 10,000 people have come through it since. Preparation that barely existed in 2018, CELPIP exam technique and the knowledge behind it, is now a settled course, and the score arrives sooner for it.
