Since the pandemic, more Vancouver parents have wanted a serious online option. The reason is ordinary: crossing the city at four in the afternoon - Dunbar to Oakridge, Kitsilano to Renfrew - can cost more time than the lesson itself, and a Grade 11 student carrying Pre-Calculus 11, Chemistry 11 and an AP course does not have that time to give. Online, the same teacher covers English, math, physics, chemistry and AP work from the kitchen table.
We teach VSB and independent-school students across Vancouver online, and plan the years ahead with them. West-side families come to us to hold a heavy course load together; east-side families come to get a mark moving before the Grade 11 report card sets. Nobody drives anywhere.
How a Vancouver student gets a mark moving
A senior planning advisor goes through the report card and the course plan before anyone books a lesson: which mark is soft, which prerequisite is thin, whether Pre-Calculus 11 will hold in September. Foundations, review, homework and exam preparation then sit in one plan rather than three.
Licensed local teachers build the plan around the student's real timetable - the AP course, the mini-school workload, the Grade 12 year with an application inside it. One-to-one where a student needs pushing, small group where they work better beside others.
One teacher stays with the student, so a topic missed in October does not turn up again in a June exam. Parents get regular feedback and a stage assessment they can read, which means progress is something you can follow rather than hope for.

Vancouver School Board, District 39, one of the largest districts in Western Canada. It runs public education for the city through 89 elementary schools, 18 secondary schools and 2 adult education centres. Several schools in the district carry more than a hundred years of history, and on provincial exam results and university scholarship rates the board's secondary schools rank first.
Every school in the district has modern facilities and real learning resources behind a serious academic culture, and the course sequence is built to carry a student from Grade 8 to a diploma without gaps. The board also runs international education programs: K-12 courses, the BC secondary school diploma, AP courses, the IB program, short courses through the year, summer English and culture programs, and ESL support.

Founded in 1898, Crofton House opened as a co-educational school and became an independent girls' school with a demanding academic culture and real attention to the whole student. It offers Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 with a broad, complete course list, including a full slate of AP courses for students to choose from. Athletics and the arts carry weight too, with tennis, softball, baseball, photography, music and art running as both clubs and courses.
Crofton House graduates have gone on to leading North American universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Duke University, New York University, the University of California, UBC, the University of Toronto and McGill University.
Strong graduate outcomes and a top ranking make Crofton one of the schools Vancouver parents ask about most, and admission is highly competitive. The junior school admits at Junior and Senior Kindergarten and at Grade 6; the senior school usually takes new students only at Grade 8.
St. George's School opened in 1930 and is one of the strongest boys' independent schools in BC and in Canada. Its founding mission is to raise students who love learning, hold a healthy body and mind, pursue excellence and give something back to society. Confidence is built deliberately here, and nearly a century of graduates shows what that produces.
The school holds students to both academic results and strength of character. It runs Kindergarten to Grade 12 with wide academic choice, including enriched courses and a long list of AP courses. Students compete regionally, nationally and internationally, and the sports clubs and activities are heavily subscribed, so a student develops on more than one front.
St. George's graduating classes place 100% into universities in the US, Canada and the UK, and more than half of each year's graduates earn a BC provincial scholarship. Admission to the province's leading boys' school is competitive: the junior school has more places at Kindergarten, Grade 4 and Grade 6, and Grade 8 is the main intake year for the senior school.
Lord Byng Secondary is a Vancouver School Board school offering Grades 8-12. It sits in the Point Grey neighbourhood on the city's west side, with a library resource centre, gym, computer labs, a drama studio and art studios, plus access to the sports facilities at the community centre next door.
Lord Byng is a public school built around academics and the arts. The academic course list is complete, with senior courses including Calculus 12, Physics 12, English 12 and Honours Art 12. Electives run from business education, accounting and information technology to drama, visual art and media, sculpture, architecture, French and Spanish, alongside orchestra, choir, composition, sports clubs and teams, and community service.
Of everything Lord Byng teaches, the arts stand out furthest. The program develops artists through a deep set of studio and academic courses: drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, sculpture, jewellery making, film studies and media arts. Music students play in the string orchestra, concert and jazz bands, symphony and jazz choir, and perform at festivals and international competitions.
Point Grey Secondary is a Vancouver School Board school offering Grades 8-12, in a residential and commercial area at the centre of the west side, close to the community centre. Teaching facilities are complete, the neighbourhood is well served, and transit is easy.
The academic culture is strong and the course list is comprehensive, with senior courses including Calculus 12, English 12, Chemistry 12 and Physics 12. Electives include accounting, architectural drafting, marketing, information technology, drama, visual art, commercial design, textiles, French, Spanish and Japanese.
Performing arts and athletics are prominent as well. Point Grey offers drama, stagecraft, music and photography, and gives students who care about music a platform in school musicals, local performances and festivals. School teams cover soccer, tennis, golf, basketball, volleyball, rugby, field hockey, track and swimming, with clubs from drama to animation and dance.
What a tutor charges in Vancouver tracks three things: the student's grade, the subject, and how long the teacher has stood in a BC classroom. A Grade 4 reading tutor and a Chemistry 12 specialist are not the same hire, and standardised-test work - AP, SAT, IELTS - sits at the top of that market. Most centres in Vancouver cover school English and math. Fewer carry the senior sciences, AP and university applications under one roof, which is where a Grade 11 year actually gets decided. Start with the questions a math teacher would ask. What grade? Is the student in Math 8 or already in Pre-Calculus 11? Is this a slipping in-class mark, a jump into Calculus 12, or contest preparation? In Vancouver it is often the Grade 10 to 11 step that exposes a gap left two years earlier, and that changes who should teach them.

Before you hire an English tutor in Vancouver, decide what you are buying. An ELL student who needs out of the stream quickly is one job; a fluent speaker who cannot structure an essay is another; homework support and English 12 exam preparation are two more. A Vancouver classroom holds all four at once, which is why the teacher has to be matched to the problem.

If AP is meant to carry a competitive application, take the courses that admissions officers weigh: English Literature or Language and Composition, Calculus or Statistics, and a history - US, World or European. Add at least one science: biology, chemistry or physics. Vancouver students at Byng, Point Grey and Hamber often carry three APs into Grade 12, and by then timing matters as much as content.
