WHAT IT IS

What Community College Application Advising Is

A US community college is a two-year institution. Students finish with an Associate Degree. From there they can work in the US, or transfer into the third and fourth year of a four-year university and finish with a Bachelor's Degree.

That transfer step is the part families underestimate. US four-year universities usually close transfer applications between September and November of the preceding year, with most deadlines in October. The date sets the whole schedule.

We advise on both steps together: the community college application first, and the transfer application already blocked into the calendar.

What one advising engagement covers

Target list

The community colleges to apply to, and the four-year universities and majors to transfer into two years later.

Application file

The non-refundable application fee, the application forms, an English-language high school transcript, TOEFL or IELTS scores, a personal statement, reference letters, and identity documents such as a passport.

Transfer schedule

From confirming targets in June–August through to results in May–June of the following year, every checkpoint dated.

Essays and references

Written around the student's own strengths rather than a template.

WHO IT'S FOR

Who It's For

Grade 11 and up, for families planning to enter US higher education through a two-year college. Also for students already enrolled at a community college who are preparing to transfer.

OUR SERVICES

What We Do: Three Services

What a parent has at the end of a season: a two-tier target list, a finished personal statement, a submission record for every school, and a full transfer schedule.

Application file and essays

  • Focus: the application file assembled against each target college's current published requirements — transcripts, test scores, personal statement, references.
  • Who it's for: Grade 12 students with a college list already settled who need their record written up persuasively.
  • The edge: the essay is built from the student's own strengths, then revised until it reads like them.

Wondering what a US community college application actually requires, or what a strong personal statement looks like? Our application team will walk you through it.

Planning and advising

  • Focus: a dated application plan, followed end to end by one advisor.
  • Who it's for: Grade 11 to Grade 12 families who want the college step and the transfer step scheduled together from the start.
  • The edge: one advisor from the first meeting to enrolment, so nothing is handed off mid-season.

Transfer preparation

  • Focus: the transfer file — transcripts, personal statement, references and activity record — finished before the September-to-November crunch.
  • Who it's for: students already at a community college aiming at the third year of a four-year university.
  • The edge: we work from each receiving university's published transfer requirements, not from generic advice.

Adults planning to study in the US usually need to lift their English first — see adult English.

HOW WE WORK

How We Work Toward an Offer

A dated application plan

An experienced planning team builds the plan from the requirements the target colleges publish, then follows it through the season.

The application file

The application team prepares and checks every document, and shapes the essay around what the student is actually good at.

Current requirements, not last year's

Entry requirements and transfer rules change. We read each target school's current published requirements before the list is finalised.

HOW THE ENGAGEMENT RUNS

How the Engagement Runs: One Advisor, Parent Meetings, Tracking

Personalised planning

Our planning and application teams cover the whole span — kindergarten through school, school through university, university through work — with a different service at each stage. Every student gets their own application and planning advisor.

Parent meetings

We hold parent meetings on a regular schedule so you know where the application stands, what your child has been working on, and what comes next.

How meetings happen

  • One-to-one advising: the same advisor from the target list to enrolment.
  • Small-group planning workshops: shared steps such as school research and essay brainstorming can be done in a small group.
  • Online or in person: meetings run online, or at our Richmond centre — the address is at the bottom of this page.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE GUIDE

US Community College Guide

What is a US community college?

A US community college is a two-year institution in the US higher education system. It covers roughly the first and second year of a four-year university's foundation coursework. Students finish with an Associate Degree, then either work in the US or transfer into the third and fourth year of a four-year university and finish with a Bachelor's Degree.

What are the entry requirements?

Tuition and fees are comparatively low, so the financial bar is lower than at a four-year university. Admission is less competitive and the staff-to-student ratio is higher, so the requirements on high school grades, academic record and English are not as demanding. For a student whose academic base is still being built, entry is relatively open.

What does the transfer timeline look like?

US four-year universities normally close transfer applications between September and November of the preceding year, with most deadlines in October. The suggested schedule we give students planning to transfer into third year:

  1. June–August: confirm the target school and program, and read their transfer requirements.
  2. August: open the transfer application online and start the forms.
  3. September–November: contact the target schools, programs and faculty; take part in community and club activities; assemble transcripts, personal statement and reference letters.
  4. November: submit the transfer applications.
  5. January (following year): send updated transcripts.
  6. January–February: confirm that reference letters for the autumn intake are prepared and sent.
  7. March: final check that everything has been submitted.
  8. April: send the latest transcript.
  9. May–June: results arrive.
Which community colleges are there, and how are they ranked?
What is the application process?

The steps our application advisors give students:

  1. Open an online application account at each college and complete the profile.
  2. Choose the program.
  3. Provide what each target school asks for: school records, transcripts, proof of extracurricular activity, AP exam results, IELTS or TOEFL scores, personal statement and reference letters.
  4. Send updated documents on time, such as the second-semester Grade 12 transcript.
  5. Follow the application account and the school's admissions notices, and prepare for interviews.
  6. Review the offers and decide whether to accept.
  7. Confirm the destination and pay the tuition.
Which documents are needed?

Usually: the non-refundable application fee, the application form, an English-language high school transcript, TOEFL or IELTS scores, a personal statement and reference letters, and identity documents such as a passport.

What does the planning involve?

Working out the key dates, choosing the school and the program, and preparing the documents. If you do not know where to start, that is what a first conversation is for — bring the current transcript and we will work back from the transfer deadline.

Is a community college a good choice?

Its advantages: admission is less competitive, tuition and fees are lower and study can be combined with work, course selection is more flexible, and graduates can either go straight to work or transfer into a four-year university.
