THE SERVICE

What the applications service covers

StudyPug Learning runs three lines of work together: academic planning, university applications, and private school applications. From course selection and the order extracurricular work happens in, through to school selection, application essays and interview practice, a local advisory team carries the file through to the offer.

This is not form-filling and submission. A planning advisor reads the student's strengths first, then sets the academic and extracurricular work in a workable order. The applications team writes a dated application plan and runs the supporting activities alongside it. A service team tracks the file and meets you on a schedule, so you know where your child's plan and application stand.

WHO IT'S FOR

Who it's for

Grades and stages

The service spans Kindergarten through secondary school, secondary school into university, and university into work — K-12 and beyond. The widest service on this page covers that whole band.

When to start

For a university application, begin the academic planning before Grade 10 in Canada, or before the first year of senior secondary in China. The earlier the plan starts, the more time there is to do it properly.

Common targets

University of Toronto — engineering, computer science, life sciences, nursing. University of British Columbia — engineering, business, medicine, law. Simon Fraser University — applied sciences, natural sciences, business, education, arts. Students applying to Canadian computer science programs usually strengthen their coding work at the same time.

Three kinds of family come to us

Families preparing years ahead of a university application; families already in their application year who need essays and a school list; and families preparing for private school entrance exams and interviews.

THE FIVE SERVICES

University and private school application services

Five services sit under this page. Each is a separate piece of work — this page is where you decide which one you need.

Parents see this: a year from now you have a written course-and-application order, your child knows which subject to shore up and which exam to sit next, and the application materials were not assembled in the week before the deadline.

THE TEAMS

Who advises your child

North American applications usually involve IELTS or TOEFL. Families who are immigrating as well as studying also prepare for CELPIP and CAEL.

The teaching team includes licensed local teachers and subject teachers with years of classroom experience. Names, subjects and credentials are on the Teachers page.

North American university planning team

Our senior university planning team becomes each student's own application advisor, sets goals from that student's own profile, and plans and follows through on every step. Alongside them, a large group of experienced academic tutors helps students lift their marks, so a student stands out in coursework and in activities.

North American university applications team

Our local essay team looks for what is distinctive about each student, works the drafts over as a team, and builds an application that shows that student's strengths. With a profile-building advisor planning alongside, every student ends up with something in the application that is genuinely their own.

Private school applications team

The private school essay team works the same way, and with a profile-building advisor it prepares a child for a top private school — and for the Canadian and U.S. university applications that come after it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How can I improve my university application?
Our consultants will work with you closely to make revisions to your application, connect you to extracurricular activities, and prepare you for interview components. Improvements and suggestions can vary for each student.
What kind of academic planning do you provide?
Our academic consultants provide guidance for private school, and Canadian and American university applications. We also offer career consultations for students to have a clearer idea of what they'd like to do in the future.
What kind of career preparation do you provide?
We sit with students and learn about their goals, objectives, and future career plans before drafting several pathways that they can take. We encourage students to begin early so they can spend their high school years preparing for their future with guidance. We recommend post-secondary programs, extracurriculars that will look impressive on applications, and suggestions for capstone projects.
How important is having a unique university application?
A unique application can be the deciding factor in competitive admissions. Many students share similar grades and test scores, so admissions officers look for personal qualities, experiences, and goals that set each applicant apart. A generic application risks blending in, while one that clearly reflects who you are stands out immediately. Our consultants work with each student to identify their individual strengths, shape their narrative, and present an application that cannot be replicated — giving them the strongest possible chance at their dream school.
What are the benefits of academic planning?
Through academic planning, students can gain confidence in their future career plans and ask questions they may have on how to attain lesser-known majors or programs. Students will also have a clearly defined roadmap to follow and a professional to turn to if they ever feel lost or stuck.
What are the differences between Canadian and American university applications?
The main difference between the two applications is that Canadian universities focus mostly on grades, whereas American universities require essays, recommendations, and other written supplementary material. Our consultants will work closely with students to ensure their application writing fits other application trends while also standing out from others.
Does academic planning include tutoring in English, science, etc.?
No, academic planning is only limited to applications and career planning. If students require additional assistance in academic subjects, we offer private tutoring and group classes.
Will I be guaranteed into my university of my choice after having academic planning?
Students will need to work closely with their academic consultant to make changes to their application and complete the assigned work before deadlines provided by the university. By cooperating together, students will have a polished application to send to universities.
