ELL TUTORING

How we move students up ELL levels — and out

A student in ELL is not behind in school — they are behind in the language school is taught in. Those are different problems, and the second one has a route out. Here is what that route is built on.

Built on the school boards' ELL curriculum

Our ELL tutoring follows the ELL curriculum the Canadian school boards actually use. We assess a student's English level properly, teach to the knowledge points the ELL assessments test, and work towards the next level up.

Who it's for: families who have been told a level and not much else, and want to know what specifically has to change to move.

The edge: the levelling and the teaching come from the same curriculum the school is levelling against, so progress in class shows up in the school's own assessment.

Taught by local licensed ELL teachers

A team of local licensed English teachers with over 10 years of ELL tutoring experience. They know each board's ELL requirements and levelling standards, teach to the priorities of each ELL level, and target the in-school ELL Assessment result.

Who it's for: students whose spoken English sounds fine and whose written work still comes back marked down.

The edge: licensed local teachers, named on this page with their credentials, who have taken students through these levels before.

The platform behind the classes

The StudyPug online learning platform has served millions of students and is used by school districts across Canada. Full course planning, regular assessment and written learning feedback come with the class.

Who it's for: parents who want to see progress on a schedule instead of asking how it is going.

The edge: the teaching, the practice and the reporting sit in one place, so parents keep seeing where their child is without chasing it.

English

ELL 1 class / ESL Level 1

One of our signature English courses, written by our English education specialists around the school boards' ELL/ESL curriculum. It secures the grammar foundations, widens vocabulary, and starts systematic ELL work across listening, speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary - the point at which a student begins to think in English and to study it as a habit.

For Grade 4-5 students, or students at ELL level 1
English

ELL 2 class / ESL Level 2

One of our signature English courses, built by our English education specialists from the school boards' ELL/ESL curriculum. It holds the foundations steady while listening, speaking, reading and writing are taught as a system and vocabulary widens, so a student can use English across the board rather than in pieces.

For Grade 5-6 students, or students at ELL level 2
English

ELL 3 class / ESL Level 3

One of our signature English courses, scheduled by our English education specialists against the school boards' ELL/ESL curriculum. It lifts the skills a level, builds the habit of thinking in English, widens vocabulary, teaches efficient listening and reading technique, and sharpens how a student speaks and writes.

For Grade 6-7 students, or students at ELL level 3
English

ELL 4 class / ESL Level 4

One of our signature English courses, designed by local English specialists to the school boards' ELL/ESL curriculum. It puts the whole of a student's English in order, develops the way a native speaker thinks in the language, builds idiomatic speaking and writing and strong listening and reading technique, and pulls it all together into real command of the language.

For Grade 8-9 students, or students at ELL level 4
OUR TEAM

Our ELL teachers

ELL is taught by local licensed teachers. The job is not only to raise a level — it is to hand the student the English they will still need after ELL is behind them.

ELL coaching that holds

Our English teachers and curriculum team build the levelled ELL courses from the local ELL curriculum and years of ELL coaching. A student gets foundations that hold, a method for learning English, the habit of using it, and English that sounds like English.

Progress you can follow

So parents know where things stand, we invite you to regular parent-teacher meetings. Your teacher goes through how your child is doing, the goal for the next stage and the plan to reach it, and what we can each do to make the learning easier.

WHY US

Why families choose our ELL classes

🎯 Levelled to the student, not just the grade

Plans start from where the student actually is across ELL 1-4, not from the grade on the timetable.

👨‍🏫 We know the BC school system

Local licensed teachers who understand what BC classrooms ask for and where ELL puts its weight.

📚 Tied to what school is teaching

Classroom English, academic vocabulary and writing requirements together, so students can use what they learn the same week.

📅 Progress tracked on a schedule

Class performance, assessments and written feedback keep the priorities current instead of annual.

🌱 English that outlasts ELL

Not only finishing the ELL programme — building the English base the rest of school will keep asking for.

🚪 Into the mainstream classroom sooner

Confidence first, then a step-by-step move into mainstream classes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

ELL and ESL questions parents ask

How many ELL levels are there in BC schools?
Four. ELL 1 through ELL 4 run from the most language support to the least. Students in ELL 1 to 3 spend more of their time and energy on English itself, so their choice of regular English and humanities courses is restricted — which is exactly why most families want to raise the level and get out of the school's ELL stream as early as they can.
Who teaches your ELL and ESL classes?
Local licensed English teachers with years of ELL tutoring experience in BC. They know the school boards' ELL curriculum and assessment outlines, so classes build listening, speaking, reading and writing while following what the board actually requires. Students get familiar with the ELL question types, build a repeatable way of answering them, and raise their English marks faster. The teachers on this page are named above with their credentials.
How do online ELL classes work, and are they as good as in person?
Both work, and the teachers and the content are the same either way. The StudyPug online learning platform has served millions of students and is used by school districts across Canada. Our teachers are trained to teach online as well as in the classroom, and it is the most complete online teaching set-up in Canada for this kind of levelled English work. Online saves the commute and suits families further out; in-person runs at our Richmond centre and suits students who do better with a teacher beside them. You can switch by term.
Which ELL tutoring should we choose in Vancouver?
Check three things: whether the classes follow your own school board's ELL curriculum, whether the teachers are locally licensed, and whether the levels are split finely enough to match your child rather than their grade. Ours follow the school boards' ELL curriculum, are taught by local licensed English teachers, and are split by English level and grade together — which is why a Level 2 student and a Level 4 student are not in the same room.
Is there affordable 1-on-1 ESL tutoring for a school-age child?
Yes. 1-on-1 English tutoring is priced by teacher and by session package, so there is more than one price point, and we will tell you which one fits before you commit. The same English team also runs targeted preparation for IELTS, CELPIP, CAEL, SAT and AP, alongside everyday English tutoring for elementary and secondary students. Named teachers, real levelling, and a price we are happy to be compared on.
What other English courses do you offer besides ESL?
ESL and ELL levels 1 to 4, plus targeted work: ELL Reading and ELL Writing; SSAT reading, writing and vocabulary for private-school applicants; SAT Writing and Language; AP English Literature and Composition with graded reading alongside it; and IELTS and CELPIP preparation for families who need a test score as well as a school result.
What is the difference between ELL and ESL?
In BC the school programme is usually called ELL — English Language Learners. ESL, English as a Second Language, is the older and still more widely used term for the same kind of support. We use both words on this page because families search for both, and our classes are levelled to the ELL levels the school boards assign.
How do we get started with an online class?
Every student gets a study group and a class service team. Before the first class, a coordinator sets up the online learning account with you, walks through the platform, and tells you what to have ready. After that, scheduling, homework follow-up and assessments all run through the same team.
TESTIMONIALS

What students and parents say

I have been taking Advanced Writing for a year, and I think Tyler is one of the best teachers I have had. He is easy to talk to and always makes you feel comfortable asking questions. His classes are well organized and we always get a lot done. He gives helpful feedback and pays attention to how each student is doing. Most importantly I can see my improvements through my school work. I have been getting higher marks since taking this course!

My child enjoys Tyler's class. There are a lot of discussions in class, and they practice writing and conversation at the same time.
