Surrey is a large city to drive across. Cloverdale to Newton, South Surrey to Guildford - a weekday evening trip to a learning centre can cost an hour before anyone opens a textbook. The semester calendar makes that more expensive than it sounds: a course can be over in January, so a weak first month is hard to repair. Online lessons start on time and keep step with the course.

Surrey is the second-largest city in British Columbia and, like Richmond, part of Greater Vancouver. Families move here for space and for the schools: a public district larger than any other in the province, independent schools that place near the top of provincial tables, and university campuses inside the city rather than an hour away.
Surrey is roughly a 40-minute drive from downtown Vancouver, which matters less than it used to now that so much sits south of the river. It has become, after Richmond, a first-choice area for Chinese-Canadian families - South Surrey and White Rock in particular, where the streets are quiet and the schools are strong. White Rock earns its own mention: a seaside town, friendly, well served, and a holiday destination for the rest of the province. Three public schools and two independent schools in that corner sit consistently near the top of Greater Vancouver secondary rankings.

The Surrey School District is the largest public district in British Columbia, and among the fastest growing and most inventive. Founded in 1906, it now runs 101 elementary schools (Kindergarten to Grade 7) and 20 secondary schools (Grades 8 to 12), serving local families and recruiting international students from around the world. Individual schools range from 100 to 1,600 students, with about 73,000 enrolled in total and international students no more than 5% of that. The school year runs from September to the following June, with a short break at the end of December and another at the end of March. International students usually enter in September, though some secondary schools also take students partway through at the end of January.
Compared with the Vancouver and Richmond districts, Surrey schools have a lower share of Chinese-speaking students - roughly 10-15%, against Vancouver or Richmond schools where the figure can pass 50%. For parents who want their child inside local culture, that matters. South Surrey and North Surrey are largely English-speaking residential areas, so classrooms lean that way, which helps a student pick up Western culture quickly.
In short: deep resources, flexibility in choosing a school, small classes and a wide course list. The semester structure in particular gives international students more flexibility and more control over their own path.

Southridge School is a leading independent school in South Surrey, and has been ranked first among BC secondary schools more than once - the highest-placed non-denominational co-educational school in the province. It opened in 1995 and offers Kindergarten to Grade 12, including the internationally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
Grades 8-12 follow the BC curriculum. Required courses in Grades 8-10 include math, science, social studies, English, French, Spanish, physical education, and health and career education. From Grade 11 the full range of subject options opens up, and Grades 11-12 are built around university entry, with the school and its teachers working to get students strong AP and provincial results.
As a top school that is co-educational and non-denominational, Southridge is a favourite among Chinese-Canadian parents, and admission is hard-fought. Applicants need strong SSAT scores, and families interview with the school. Semiahmoo Secondary opened in 1940, with about 1,400 students enrolled and roughly 100 teaching and support staff. Its music program is well known, jazz in particular, and its visual arts offering is among the broadest of any secondary school in the province. More of its graduates go on to Emily Carr University than from any other BC secondary school. Since 2007 it has run a visual arts IB program, the largest of its kind in BC.
Fleetwood Park Secondary has 1,403 students and 76 staff. Electives are wide-ranging - woodwork, culinary arts, computing, engineering, drama and music - and the school offers the core AP courses families ask about: AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Calculus. It places well among Surrey secondary schools and is well regarded by students and parents alike.
Surrey runs AP at Fleetwood Park, Semiahmoo and elsewhere, and on a semester timetable an AP course can be finished by the end of January - so choose early and choose for weight. Take English Literature or Language and Composition, Calculus or Statistics, and one history: US, World or European. Add at least one science - biology, chemistry or physics. If there is capacity after that, something lighter is worth having, such as AP Psychology, Economics, Computer Science or Environmental Science. More on choosing and studying: "What is AP? We teach Grades 8-12 across Surrey: math to Pre-Calculus 12 and Calculus, physics, chemistry, biology and English, AP courses with exam practice, and SSAT, SAT, IELTS and TOEFL preparation - the SSAT mostly for families aiming at Southridge or Pacific Academy. Tutor rates in Surrey follow the grade, the subject and the teacher's experience. Elementary reading and Math 8 sit at one end; Chemistry 12, AP Calculus and standardised-test work sit at the other, where what you are paying for is a certified teacher who has marked that exam before. Ask about the qualification and the grade band first, and the rest of the conversation gets easier.
Great tutoring. The teachers go from the basics all the way up to university-level content, and it is a relaxed place to concentrate. I would recommend it to anyone who likes math and wants to push further, and if your grade is stuck, someone will help.
