The City of Burnaby sits at the centre of Greater Vancouver in British Columbia, bordered to the west by the City of Vancouver, to the east by Port Moody and Coquitlam, and to the south by the Fraser River. The Burnaby School District is one of the largest public districts in British Columbia, with 8 secondary schools and 41 elementary schools providing K-12 education to local and international students. Every school in the district is recognised by the BC Ministry of Education, and a student who meets the Grade 12 requirements graduates with the BC secondary school diploma.
The district's course list is deep and complete, covering academic subjects including English, math, science and ESL. Burnaby also runs one of the widest elective ranges in the province - visual and performing arts, e-commerce, marketing, animation and more - which gives students room to find what they are good at. Beyond in-school results, the district runs Advanced Placement (AP) courses, which it describes on its own site as "one of the largest Advanced Placement Programs in Canada" (source, accessed 2026-07-31), giving strong Grade 12 students the chance to earn university credit early.

St. Thomas More Collegiate is currently the top-ranked school in Burnaby, in the Edmonds neighbourhood in the south of the city. It opened in 1960 as a Catholic co-educational independent school and teaches Grades 8-12. It is one of the strongest all-round independent schools in the province, and St. Thomas More Collegiate sends graduates to well-known Canadian and US universities every year.
The course list is broad and complete: the core academic subjects - English, math, physics, chemistry, biology - alongside art, performance, business, religious studies and physical education. Athletics are a particular strength, with swimming, wrestling, rugby and track long-standing programs that have produced elite athletes, plus soccer, tennis, volleyball, golf, rowing and ice sports.
The school also offers distance learning courses and academic and personal counselling. Beyond academic ability it puts weight on faith, character and individual strengths, with a full activity program that pushes students into community service and out into the world as capable citizens.
Cariboo Hill is a small Burnaby School District secondary school. It is not large, but the art room, drama room, music room, workshop, photography studio, science labs and library are all there, and the atmosphere is warm - local and international students alike get real attention from the teachers.
Alongside the required high school courses, students who are performing well can take honours courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses and French Immersion. Cariboo Hill also carries an unusually wide elective list, including trades and technology options rarely offered elsewhere, such as automotive repair and woodwork. Its visual and performing arts courses give students who care about photography or music the chance to show work in local exhibitions and play in ensembles.
Moscrop Secondary School is a long-established Burnaby School District school, widely recognised for its academic standards and results. Facilities are strong, with university-level science labs, multi-purpose computer rooms and first-rate dance and music spaces. Academics come first: the required high school courses, French Immersion, and a long list of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, plus high-quality visual and performing arts courses in music technology, arranging and conducting, dance, and drama and playwriting. Moscrop also offers several career preparation courses, and a wide set of interest classes and clubs from chemistry to basketball and badminton.
What a tutor costs in Burnaby follows the grade, the subject and the teacher's experience. Elementary reading and Math 8 support is one market; Chemistry 12, AP Calculus and SAT work is another, and certified teachers with a decade of BC classroom experience sit at the top of it. Ask what the teacher is licensed to teach, and which grades they have actually taught, before comparing anything else.
Burnaby is not short of centres near Metrotown and Brentwood. The useful question is whether one place can carry a student from Grade 7 all the way to a university offer. Burnaby classrooms are among the most multilingual in the province, so start with the specific problem. Is the student in ELL and needs out of it? The district describes its own AP program as one of the largest in Canada, which means a Grade 11 student in Burnaby can end up carrying three AP courses without anyone thinking it unusual. Choose them for weight: English Literature or Language and Composition, Calculus or Statistics, a history, and at least one science - biology, chemistry or physics. Really good tutoring. The teachers cover everything from the fundamentals up to university-level material, and the space is calm enough that work gets done. Anyone who enjoys math and wants more of it should come. When a grade is stuck there is always someone friendly to help.
