Coquitlam, formally the City of Coquitlam, is a city in British Columbia, in the Greater Vancouver area, about 30 minutes by car from downtown Vancouver. The 2016 Census of Canada recorded a population of 139,284. The city sits roughly fifteen kilometres east of Vancouver, bounded to the east by the Coquitlam River and Port Coquitlam, to the south by the Fraser River, to the west by Port Moody and Burnaby, and to the southwest by New Westminster. With neighbouring Port Moody and Port Coquitlam it forms the Tri-Cities.
In education, Coquitlam belongs to School District 43, the only district in Greater Vancouver that splits schooling three ways - secondary, middle and elementary. For post-secondary study, Douglas College has a campus in the city, while other institutions such as the University of British Columbia (UBC), Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Vancouver Community College (VCC) are spread across the region.
The Coquitlam School District is also known as Coquitlam School District 43(School District No. 43). It is the third-largest district in British Columbia, one of the strongest providers of elementary and secondary education in Greater Vancouver, and the only board in the region that splits schooling into elementary, middle and secondary.
The district runs 70 schools - 45 elementary, 14 middle and 11 secondary - with roughly 31,000 students enrolled. It covers Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra, and sits close to Simon Fraser University, Douglas College and the University of British Columbia.
What the district offers: the BC Ministry of Education has consistently rated SD43 among the best districts in the province; safe, prosperous communities; more than 60 years of academic and research tradition; high-tech academic facilities; a full K-12 course list plus ESL as a second language; a large number of provincial scholarships won by its students each year; a secondary diploma accepted for every Canadian and US university application; and most international students going on to college or university after graduating.
SD43 runs elementary from K-5, middle school from Grade 6-8 and secondary from Grade 9-12. Eight of its secondary schools are among the newest and most inventive in BC, with strong academic and specialist programmes such as AP courses, French immersion and the International Baccalaureate (IB). Coquitlam secondaries also give students a wide choice in team sport, art, drama and music. The schools are safe, and closely tied to the community around them.

Charles Best takes both halves of school life seriously. A full secondary course list, AP courses and French immersion on the academic side; art and athletics on the other. The school has a new visual and performing arts wing, refitted technology education shops, business education and computer programming rooms, a new indoor gymnasium and a large floodlit field, so students have somewhere to spend their afternoons and something to get good at.
Riverside is known for its technology education and its Korean drumming group. The academic programme is broad -English 10-12, Math 9-12 and Science 9-10 among the intensive courses - with a wide elective list on top: Grade 11/12 applied science, French intensive, AP Physics, AP Chemistry and AP Psychology, enough to cover most academic plans.
Gleneagle keeps its focus on in-school academics while offering electives such as AP courses for students who want more. It also looks after the ones who come for arts and sport. The open shared student area leads onto a large multi-use outdoor field, a modern gymnasium and an outdoor pool. Gleneagle works with Emily Carr University of Art + Design as well, which gives its Grade 12 students a route into design study.
What a Coquitlam tutor charges depends on a few things: the student's grade, the type of English course - ELL support, AP English, SAT English - and the tutor's own experience and years in the classroom.
