OSSD Advantages at Top Universities - Where the Edge Comes From

The universities families care about most sit in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong, and a domestic transcript or entrance exam result carries almost no weight with them. OSSD lets a student apply as an Ontario high school student: a lower bar, less friction, a higher success rate.

An OSSD diploma makes a student an Ontario graduate, treated on the same terms as any local applicant.

Applying to Ontario universities with OSSD:

• Ontario is Canada's political, economic, cultural and educational centre; Ottawa and Toronto are both in the province.
• Roughly 70% of the country's strongest university capacity sits here, including more than 50% of Canada's top universities: the University of Toronto (the best in Canada), Queen's University (Canada's Princeton) and the University of Waterloo (Canada's MIT).

A bonus on Canadian applications: no language test

No IELTS or TOEFL is needed if a student meets any one of these three conditions

• Some universities accept the Grade 12 English mark in place of a language test: the University of Saskatchewan and the University of New Brunswick, for example.
• Some accept two or three years of full-time OSSD study in place of a language test: Queen's University and the University of Alberta, for example.
• Almost every university waives IELTS for a student with four years of full-time OSSD study.

An IB score of 29, then a move to OSSD in Grade 11. Real ability and a timely switch put this student in their first-choice school.

Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Canada are all Commonwealth countries, so with an OSSD diploma:

• no university asks for another standardised test result;
• and some waive the standardised language test as well.

OSSD students skip the one-year foundation and the A-Level exams, applying on six Grade 12 coursework marks, and the offer rate is higher.
