There is no single national science curriculum in the US. Each state adopts its own standards, which determine what is taught at every grade level.
How science frameworks differ between states
States vary in when topics like chemistry, physics, or earth science are introduced. Some follow the Next Generation Science Standards; others, such as Texas and Virginia, maintain their own independently written frameworks.
How science progresses through school
In elementary grades, science is typically integrated across topics. By high school, courses become named subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and their sequence depends on the state.
Where science gets assessed
