Definition
The ability to use the senses and appropriate tools carefully to notice and record details about objects and events. Good observation is the foundation of science, providing the evidence used to ask questions and test ideas.
Worked examples
A student measures the temperature of ice water every minute as it warms, recording \(0^\circ\)C\(\), \(2^\circ\)C\(\), \(5^\circ\)C\(\), \(9^\circ\)C\(\).
Using a thermometer and careful timing produces precise, repeatable data about the warming process.
Observing a plant under a hand lens reveals tiny hairs on the stem that weren't visible to the naked eye.
Using the right tool—a magnifier—lets you notice and record details your eyes alone would miss.
Common mistakes
- writing "the liquid got hot" without measuring → recording the actual temperature with a thermometer Good observation uses tools to get precise, measurable data instead of vague impressions.
- looking quickly and moving on → taking time to notice details, patterns, and changes Rushing causes you to miss important evidence; careful observation requires patience and focus.
