The gathering of measurements and observations during an investigation. Careful, organised data collection ensures that the evidence is accurate and complete enough to support valid conclusions.
Worked examples
Recording the temperature of water every 30 seconds as it heats, using a thermometer and writing each value in a table.
Organized measurements at regular intervals ensure you capture a complete picture of how temperature changes.
Observing and noting the color, texture, and smell of a chemical reaction in a lab notebook immediately as it happens.
Qualitative observations recorded right away prevent forgetting important details that support your conclusion.
Common mistakes
- Writing down measurements from memory at the end of the experiment → Recording each measurement immediately as you take it Memory is unreliable; real-time recording prevents errors and missing data.
- Collecting only the data points that match your hypothesis → Recording all measurements and observations, even unexpected ones Cherry-picking data introduces bias and leads to invalid conclusions.
