Definition

The process of determining the size of a quantity using standard units and instruments, such as measuring length with a ruler or mass with a balance. Accurate measurement allows results to be compared and repeated.

Worked examples

Using a ruler marked in centimeters to find a pencil is \(15.2\) cm long
The ruler provides standard units (cm) and the instrument lets you read the length accurately.
Placing an object on a balance to determine its mass is \(245\) g
The balance is the instrument; grams are the standard unit for measuring mass.
