Definition
The process of quantifying forces, typically measured in newtons (N) using a device such as a spring scale. Measuring force lets scientists compare pushes and pulls and analyse how forces affect the motion of objects.
Worked examples
\(F = 25\,\)N\(\)
A spring scale stretched by a hanging weight reads 25 newtons — that is the force of gravity on the object.
\(F_{\)push\(} = 120\,\)N\(\)
Pushing a cart with 120 newtons lets us compare this force to friction or the force needed to accelerate it.
Common mistakes
- Force is measured in kilograms or grams → Force is measured in newtons (N) Kilograms measure mass, not force. Weight is a force, so it is measured in newtons.
- A spring scale measures the mass of an object → A spring scale measures the force (weight) acting on the object Spring scales respond to force. Mass stays the same everywhere; weight (force) changes with gravity.
- Reading \(10\,\)N\(\) means the object weighs 10 kg → \(10\,\)N\(\) is the force; mass \(\approx 1\,\)kg\(\) on Earth Force and mass are different. Use \(F = mg\) to convert; on Earth \(g \approx 10\,\)m/s\(^2\).
