Balanced Forces

Definition
Forces acting on an object that are equal in size and opposite in direction, so they cancel out. When forces are balanced, the net force is zero and the object stays still or keeps moving at a steady speed.
Worked examples
A book resting on a table: gravity pulls down with \(10\,\)N\(\), the table pushes up with \(10\,\)N\(\).
The forces are equal and opposite, so the net force is zero and the book stays still.
A car cruising at \(60\,\)km/h\(\): engine force forward \(500\,\)N\(\), air resistance backward \(500\,\)N\(\).
Balanced forces mean the car keeps moving at the same steady speed — no acceleration.
Common mistakes
- Balanced forces mean the object must be at rest. → Balanced forces mean the object stays at rest OR moves at constant velocity. An object in steady motion also has zero net force — Newton's first law applies to both cases.
- If forces are balanced, there are no forces acting on the object. → Forces are acting, but they cancel each other out to give zero net force. Balanced means the forces add to zero, not that they are absent.
- Two forces of different sizes can be balanced if they are opposite. → Balanced forces must be equal in size AND opposite in direction. Unequal forces produce a net force and cause acceleration, so they are unbalanced.
