Definition

A force that opposes the relative motion, or attempted motion, between two surfaces in contact. Static friction prevents motion from starting, while kinetic friction acts on surfaces that are already sliding, converting energy into heat.

Worked examples

A book resting on a table stays in place because static friction balances any small push.
Static friction prevents motion from starting until the applied force exceeds its maximum.
A sled sliding down a snowy hill slows down as kinetic friction converts its kinetic energy into heat.
Kinetic friction opposes the motion of surfaces already sliding past each other.

Friction force equals the coefficient of friction times the normal force pressing the surfaces together.

Common mistakes

  • Friction always opposes motion in the direction opposite to velocity.Friction opposes relative motion between surfaces; it can point forward (e.g., walking). When you walk, static friction on your foot pushes you forward by preventing your foot from sliding backward.
  • Static friction is weaker than kinetic friction.Static friction is typically stronger than kinetic friction for the same surfaces. That's why it's harder to start pushing a heavy box than to keep it moving once it's sliding.
  • Friction depends on the surface area in contact.Friction depends on the normal force and the coefficient of friction, not contact area. A book lying flat or on its edge experiences the same friction if the normal force is unchanged.
