Definition
Instruments used to observe and measure the natural world, such as rulers, thermometers, microscopes, and balances. Each tool extends our senses or improves accuracy, allowing more detailed and reliable observations.
Worked examples
Using a graduated cylinder to measure \(50.0\) mL of water instead of estimating by eye.
The graduated cylinder's markings give a precise volume measurement that observation alone cannot provide.
A microscope magnifies a drop of pond water \(400\times\), revealing tiny organisms invisible to the naked eye.
The microscope extends our sense of sight to observe structures far too small to see unaided.
A digital balance reads \(12.34\) g for a sample, while a hand estimate might only guess "about 10 or 15 grams."
The balance improves accuracy by measuring mass to the nearest hundredth of a gram.
Common mistakes
- Using a thermometer without waiting for the reading to stabilize → Wait until the liquid in the thermometer stops moving before recording the temperature A rushed reading captures a temperature mid-change, not the true equilibrium value.
- Reading a ruler from the end of the stick instead of the zero mark → Align the object's edge with the zero mark, then read the other end Rulers often have space before zero; starting at the end adds error to every measurement.

You'll use scientific tools throughout biology labs to view cells, in chemistry to measure reactants accurately, in physics experiments to time motion and measure forces, and in designing investigations across all sciences.
