Definition

The systematic techniques scientists use to collect and analyse information, chosen to suit the question being investigated. Methods range from controlled experiments to careful observation, such as astronomical observation of distant objects.

Worked examples

A biologist sets up two identical plant groups, waters one with salt water and one with fresh water, then measures growth over four weeks.
A controlled experiment isolates one variable to test cause and effect.
An astronomer records the brightness and position of a supernova over months without interfering with it.
Observational methods gather data when experiments are impossible or unethical.
A chemist surveys 200 students about recycling habits, then analyzes patterns in the responses.
Survey methods collect large-scale data about behaviors or opinions.
