Definition
The process of examining collected data to find patterns, relationships, and meaning. Analysis may involve organising data into tables and graphs, calculating averages, and interpreting results to answer the original question.
Worked examples
A student measures plant heights (12 cm, 15 cm, 18 cm, 14 cm, 16 cm), calculates the mean \(\frac{12+15+18+14+16}{5} = 15\) cm, and graphs growth over time.
Organizing measurements, calculating an average, and visualizing trends are all parts of data analysis.
After testing reaction times under different conditions, a scientist compares the two data sets to see which condition produced faster responses.
Analysis involves looking for patterns and relationships between variables to answer the research question.
Common mistakes
- Stopping after collecting data without calculating patterns or making comparisons → Organizing data into tables/graphs and calculating statistics to find meaning Data analysis requires examining and interpreting the data, not just gathering it.
- Ignoring outliers or unusual data points without explanation → Noting outliers and considering whether they are errors or meaningful results Outliers can reveal important patterns or measurement problems that affect conclusions.
- Drawing conclusions that go beyond what the data actually shows → Limiting conclusions to patterns supported by the evidence collected Analysis must stay grounded in the actual data; avoid overgeneralizing from limited results.
