Definition
Organising observations and measurements clearly using tables, charts, and graphs. Recording data in an orderly way makes patterns easier to see and allows results to be checked and shared with others.
Worked examples
A student measures plant height daily for a week and records: Day 1: 2.3 cm, Day 2: 2.8 cm, Day 3: 3.1 cm in a labeled table.
Clear labels, units, and organized rows make it easy to track growth over time.

A graph reveals the warming trend that a list of numbers might hide.
Common mistakes
- Writing measurements scattered across a page with no labels or units → Using a table with column headers, row labels, and units clearly marked Without organization and units, data is impossible to interpret or verify.
- Recording only some trial results and ignoring outliers → Recording all observations, including unusual results, and noting any issues Complete records let you spot errors and patterns; skipping data hides important information.

You'll use data recording in every investigation and experiment — biology labs tracking growth, chemistry measuring reactions, physics calculating motion — and when analyzing patterns in environmental science and earth science.
