Definition
The skill of developing clear, focused, and testable questions that can guide a scientific investigation. A good question is specific enough to be answered through observation or experiment and forms the starting point of inquiry.
Worked examples
Too broad: "What is weather?" → Improved: "How does temperature affect the rate of cloud formation over the ocean?"
The improved question is specific, measurable, and can be tested through observation or experiment.
Opinion-based: "Is the ocean beautiful?" → Testable: "Does salinity vary with depth in coastal waters?"
Scientific questions must be answerable through data, not personal preference.
Common mistakes
- "Why is the sky blue?" used as a testable question → "How does particle size in the atmosphere affect which wavelengths of light are scattered?" The first is too general; the second identifies variables that can be measured or manipulated.
- "Which plant is the best?" as an investigable question → "Which of three fertilizers produces the tallest tomato plants after 30 days?" "Best" is subjective; the revised question defines a measurable outcome and clear conditions.

You'll use question formation at the start of every lab, project, and inquiry activity in biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth science—and later in designing experiments, research proposals, and science fair investigations.
