Definition
Keeping all conditions in an experiment constant except the one being tested, so that any change in the result can be linked to that single variable. Controlling variables is what makes an experiment a fair test.
Worked examples
Testing if light color affects plant growth: keep water amount, pot size, temperature, and plant type identical; change only light color.
All variables stay constant except light color, so any growth difference must come from the light.
Testing exercise and heart rate: same person, same time of day, same room temperature; vary only exercise intensity.
Controlling person, time, and environment ensures the heart-rate change is due to exercise alone.
Common mistakes
- Testing different fertilizers on different plant species in different pots → Testing different fertilizers on the same species in identical pots and conditions Changing multiple variables at once makes it impossible to know which one caused the result.
- Assuming you only need to control variables you think matter → Control all variables except the one being tested, even unexpected ones Hidden variables you ignore can still affect results and ruin the fair test.

You'll apply variable control when designing any lab experiment in biology, chemistry, and physics, and later when analyzing scientific studies, clinical trials, and research validity.
