Definition

Mathematical or conceptual representations used to explain and predict natural phenomena. Models simplify complex systems so they can be studied and tested, such as a diagram of the water cycle or an equation describing motion.

Worked examples

The water cycle diagram shows evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection as arrows connecting reservoirs.
A conceptual model that simplifies Earth's hydrological system into key processes and stores.
\(d = vt\) predicts how far an object travels at constant speed.
A mathematical model that represents motion and lets you calculate distance from velocity and time.
A plastic skeleton in anatomy class represents the human skeletal system.
A physical model that simplifies the real structure so students can study bone arrangement and function.

Common mistakes

  • thinking the model is the same as the real thingrecognizing the model simplifies reality and has limits Models leave out details; a diagram of the water cycle doesn't show every cloud or river.
  • believing one model explains everything about a phenomenonusing different models for different aspects or scales Wave and particle models both describe light; neither alone is complete.

Where you'll use it next

You'll use scientific models throughout biology, chemistry, and physics to visualize atoms, cells, ecosystems, and forces. In later courses you'll evaluate competing models, refine them with data, and build your own to explain experimental results.
