Definition

An approach that examines how the parts of a system are connected and influence one another, rather than studying them in isolation. It helps explain how a change in one part can affect the whole system.

Worked examples

A pond ecosystem: Adding fertilizer increases algae growth, which blocks sunlight, killing plants below, reducing oxygen, and harming fish.
Each change cascades through the connected parts rather than staying isolated.
A thermostat system: Rising temperature triggers cooling, which lowers temperature, which stops cooling — a feedback loop maintaining balance.
The output (temperature) feeds back to control the input, showing interconnected cause and effect.
