Definition

The way separate systems connect and work together to form a larger functioning whole. In the body, for example, the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems cooperate to keep cells supplied with energy and oxygen.

Worked examples

During exercise, your respiratory system brings in oxygen, your circulatory system transports it in blood, and your muscular system uses it to produce energy.
Three body systems integrate — each performs a different role but they coordinate to meet one goal.
A smart home integrates lighting, heating, and security systems through a central hub so they respond together to sensors and commands.
Separate technologies connect and communicate to function as a single automated system.
