Definition

The ways different systems affect one another and work together. In the body, organ systems interact to keep cells supplied; in the environment, natural systems exchange matter and energy.

Worked examples

The circulatory system delivers oxygen from the respiratory system to muscle cells, which need it during exercise.
Two organ systems interact — the respiratory system supplies oxygen, and the circulatory system transports it.
Plants release oxygen into the atmosphere through photosynthesis; animals use that oxygen for respiration and release carbon dioxide that plants reuse.
Environmental systems interact by exchanging matter — a cycle connects the biosphere and atmosphere.

Common mistakes

  • Each organ system works independently and has no effect on the others.Organ systems constantly interact and depend on one another to maintain homeostasis. No system is isolated; for example, the digestive system supplies nutrients that the circulatory system distributes to all cells.
  • System interactions only happen inside a single organism.System interactions occur within organisms and between different systems in the environment. Environmental systems like the water cycle, atmosphere, and biosphere also interact by exchanging energy and matter.
