Definition

The movement of energy from one object, organism, or place to another. Energy can be transferred by heat, light, sound, electricity, or movement, and along a food chain it passes from producers to consumers.

Worked examples

A lightbulb converts electrical energy into light and heat energy that spreads into the room.
Energy transfers from electricity through the bulb to light and thermal energy in the surroundings.
In a food chain: grass (producer) → rabbit (consumer) → fox (consumer).
Chemical energy stored in grass transfers to the rabbit when eaten, then to the fox when it eats the rabbit.
A hot metal spoon placed in cold water warms the water and cools the spoon.
Thermal energy transfers from the hotter object to the cooler one until they reach the same temperature.

Common mistakes

  • Energy is lost or used up when it transfers.Energy is conserved—it changes form but the total amount stays the same. Energy transforms and spreads out, but none disappears; some may become less useful (like waste heat).
  • All energy in a food chain passes to the next level.Only about 10% of energy transfers to the next trophic level. Most energy is used by organisms for life processes or lost as heat, so only a fraction moves up the chain.
