Definition
Using less energy to perform the same task, so that less is wasted. Improving efficiency—such as using LED bulbs or better insulation—reduces energy loss, usually as heat, and lowers costs and environmental impact.
Worked examples
A 60 W incandescent bulb and a 10 W LED bulb both produce 800 lumens of light.
The LED is more energy-efficient because it uses less energy to produce the same brightness.
A furnace converts \(100\) J of fuel energy into \(85\) J of heat for the house and loses \(15\) J.
The furnace is 85% efficient; better insulation would reduce the lost energy and improve efficiency.
Common mistakes
- Energy efficiency means using less energy by doing less work or producing less output. → Energy efficiency means using less energy to achieve the same output or task. Efficiency is about reducing waste, not reducing the result you need.
- All wasted energy just disappears. → Wasted energy usually becomes heat that spreads into the surroundings. Energy is conserved; it transforms but doesn't vanish—inefficiency means more unwanted heat.
- A device that uses more power is always more efficient. → Efficiency compares useful output to total energy input, not just power rating. Higher power can mean more waste; check how much energy performs the desired task.
