Definition
The feeding positions in a food chain, such as producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and decomposers. Energy passes from one trophic level to the next, but much is lost as heat at each step.
Worked examples
Grass (producer) → Grasshopper (primary consumer) → Frog (secondary consumer) → Snake (tertiary consumer)
Each arrow represents energy transfer up one trophic level in a pond food chain.
If a plant captures \(10{,}000\) J of energy, herbivores get ~\(1{,}000\) J, carnivores ~\(100\) J
Only about 10% of energy transfers to the next level; the rest is lost as heat.
Common mistakes
- All energy moves up the chain without loss → About 90% of energy is lost as heat at each trophic level Organisms use energy for metabolism and movement; only a fraction is stored in biomass for the next level.
- Decomposers are at the top of the food chain → Decomposers operate at every level, breaking down dead matter from all trophic levels Decomposers recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem rather than forming a separate top tier.
- Herbivores and carnivores are at the same trophic level → Herbivores (primary consumers) are one level below carnivores (secondary/tertiary consumers) Trophic level is determined by feeding position: herbivores eat producers, carnivores eat herbivores or other carnivores.

You'll use trophic levels when studying energy pyramids, biomass transfer, ecosystem stability, and bioaccumulation of toxins in environmental science and ecology units.
