Definition

Communities of living organisms interacting with one another and with the non-living parts of their environment, such as water, soil, and air. Energy and nutrients flow through an ecosystem, linking all its parts together.

Worked examples

A pond ecosystem: algae (producers) → tadpoles (consumers) → dragonfly larvae (predators), with bacteria decomposing waste, all living in water with dissolved oxygen and nutrients.
Energy flows from sunlight through producers to consumers; nutrients cycle through living and non-living parts.
A desert ecosystem: cacti and shrubs adapt to scarce water and sandy soil, while lizards and hawks interact as predators and prey under intense sunlight and heat.
Different ecosystems have distinct non-living factors (climate, soil) that shape which organisms live there and how they interact.

Common mistakes

  • An ecosystem is just the living organisms in an area.An ecosystem includes both living organisms AND non-living parts like water, soil, and air. The interaction between living and non-living components is what defines an ecosystem.
  • All ecosystems are large, like forests or oceans.Ecosystems can be any size, from a rotting log to a pond to an entire biome. Size doesn't define an ecosystem; the interactions between organisms and their environment do.
  • Energy cycles through an ecosystem and is reused.Energy flows one-way through an ecosystem (eventually lost as heat); nutrients cycle and are reused. Energy enters as sunlight and exits as heat; only matter (nutrients) cycles back through decomposition.
