Definition

The living and non-living parts of an ecosystem that interact with one another. Living (biotic) parts include plants, animals, and microbes, while non-living (abiotic) parts include sunlight, water, soil, and temperature.

Worked examples

A pond ecosystem: biotic parts include fish, algae, bacteria, lily pads, and frogs; abiotic parts include water, sunlight, dissolved oxygen, and water temperature.
Both living organisms and non-living factors work together to form the complete ecosystem.
In a desert, cacti (biotic) depend on sand (abiotic), while temperature and rainfall (abiotic) determine which animals (biotic) can survive.
Abiotic components directly influence which biotic components can exist in the ecosystem.
