Definition
Interconnected natural systems that cycle matter and energy through the environment, such as the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nutrient cycles. A change in one part of a system can affect the others.
Worked examples
Rain falls → plants absorb water → animals eat plants → animals release water vapor through respiration → vapor condenses into clouds → rain falls again
The water cycle shows how matter moves through connected parts of the environment.
Fertilizer runoff adds nitrogen to a lake → algae bloom rapidly → algae die and decompose → oxygen depletes → fish populations decline
A change in one part (excess nutrients) cascades through the aquatic system, affecting other components.
Common mistakes
- Environmental systems are separate — the water cycle doesn't affect the carbon cycle → Environmental systems are interconnected — plants use water and carbon dioxide together in photosynthesis Systems overlap and interact; for example, water transports nutrients and carbon compounds through ecosystems.
- Energy cycles through environmental systems just like matter does → Matter cycles through systems, but energy flows one-way from the sun through food webs and is lost as heat Energy cannot be recycled; it enters as sunlight and exits as heat, while matter like carbon is reused.
- Changes in environmental systems only affect living things → Changes affect both living and non-living components — soil, air, water, and organisms Environmental systems include abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) parts that all interact.
