Definition
A well-supported explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a large body of evidence and repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Unlike everyday use of the word, a scientific theory is reliable, though it can be refined as new evidence emerges.
Worked examples
The theory of evolution explains how species change over time through natural selection, supported by fossils, DNA evidence, and observed adaptation.
A scientific theory unifies many observations and experiments into one tested explanation.
Cell theory states all living things are made of cells, cells come from other cells, and cells are life's basic unit — confirmed across all known organisms.
This theory has been tested millions of times and never contradicted by evidence.
Common mistakes
- "It's just a theory, so it's only a guess or opinion." → A scientific theory is a well-tested, evidence-based explanation. In science, 'theory' means reliable and supported, not uncertain or speculative.
- "Once proven, a theory becomes a law." → Theories explain why; laws describe what happens. They are different types of knowledge. Theories and laws serve different roles and neither 'graduates' into the other.
- "Theories can never change, so they are absolute truth." → Theories are refined with new evidence but remain reliable frameworks. Science updates theories to become more accurate; this is a strength, not a weakness.
