Grade 2 Math Topics in Newfoundland and Labrador

Grade 2 math in Newfoundland and Labrador covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students work on number sense, operations, patterns, measurement, geometry, and data. StudyPug has video lessons and practice problems for all of these areas, organised to match what NL schools teach.

Number Sense and Counting

In Grade 2, students extend their counting skills. They skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, count from any starting point, and identify errors in counting sequences. They also count money and use groups to count larger quantities. Understanding even and odd numbers and using ordinal numbers up to tenth are also key skills at this level.

Place Value and Representing Numbers

Students learn to represent numbers using concrete materials, tallies, pictures, symbols, words, coins, and expressions. They explain place value by grouping objects into tens and ones, and describe numbers in multiple ways. Ordering numbers and verifying sequences using number lines and charts are also covered.

Addition and Subtraction

Grade 2 students model addition and subtraction and solve problems using a variety of forms. They learn mental math strategies for basic facts, work with sums to 18, and explore corresponding subtraction facts. Adding and subtracting zero and understanding why the sum or difference stays the same is also part of the curriculum.

Patterns and Equality

Students identify and describe repeating and increasing patterns. They extend double attribute patterns, predict elements, and create their own patterns. Equality and inequality are introduced through balance scales and number sentences, helping students understand the meaning of the equals sign.

Measurement and Time

Grade 2 students estimate and measure length, height, distance around, and mass using non-standard units. They learn accurate measurement techniques and compare objects in different orientations. Reading calendar dates, naming days and months, and solving simple time problems are also part of this strand.

Geometry: 2D and 3D Shapes

Students sort 2D and 3D shapes by two attributes and explain their sorting rules. They identify attributes of 2D shapes and 3D objects, match 2D shapes to faces of 3D objects, and create models and representations. Recognising shapes in different orientations and dimensions builds strong spatial reasoning skills.

Data and Graphs

Students formulate questions for data collection, organise data using objects, tallies, charts, and lists, and answer questions using collected data. They analyse concrete graphs and pictographs, create their own graphs, and solve problems using the information displayed.
