NL Kindergarten Math Topics

Kindergarten math in Newfoundland and Labrador covers the foundational skills every young learner needs. From counting to 30 and recognizing numerals to exploring patterns and 3-D shapes, each topic prepares your child for Grade 1 success. StudyPug covers every one of these topics with short video lessons and guided practice.

Counting and Number Sense

Kindergarten students learn to count forward from 1 to 30 and backward from 10 to 1. They practice saying the number before and after a given number, and count on from any number between 1 and 10. These skills form the core of early number sense.

Subitizing and Five Frames

Students learn to identify the number of objects in a small set — up to 5 — at a glance, without counting. They also learn to read five frames quickly. StudyPug's video lessons make these visual skills easy to practise at home.

Representing and Comparing Numbers

Kindergarten students recognize numerals 1–10, construct sets for a given numeral, and print numerals. They also learn to show a number as two parts using fingers, counters, or pictures, and compare sets using words like more, fewer, and as many as.

Patterns

Students distinguish, copy, extend, and create repeating patterns. They also look for patterns in the world around them. StudyPug lessons walk through each step so your child understands how patterns work.

Measurement and 3-D Objects

Kindergarten math introduces comparing height, length, mass, and capacity using everyday language. Students also explore 3-D objects — sorting them by attributes, describing them using size and shape words, and creating their own representations.

  • Compare objects using taller, shorter, heavier, and lighter
  • Sort 3-D objects by a single attribute such as shape or size
  • Describe 3-D objects using words like round, flat, and pointed
