Definition
The instruments and substances chosen to carry out an investigation or build a design. Selecting suitable tools and materials, and using them safely, is essential to gathering reliable evidence and creating effective solutions.
Worked examples
Measuring plant growth: ruler for height, graduated cylinder for water volume, thermometer for temperature.
Each tool is chosen to measure a specific variable accurately during the investigation.
Building a water filter: gravel and sand (materials) to trap particles, funnel (tool) to direct flow.
Materials provide the filtering function; the tool helps assemble and test the design.
Common mistakes
- Using a measuring cup instead of a graduated cylinder for precise liquid volumes → Use a graduated cylinder for accurate volume measurements in experiments Graduated cylinders have finer markings and are designed for precision scientific measurement.
- Choosing materials without considering safety (e.g., using glass containers near heat without checking heat resistance) → Check that materials are safe for the conditions (heat-resistant glassware, goggles, etc.) Safety is part of selecting suitable tools and materials; improper choices can cause injury or invalid results.
