Definition
Simple implements used to perform tasks, make measurements, or observe the world, such as rulers, magnifiers, and hand tools. Choosing and using the right tool safely is a fundamental science and design skill.

Common mistakes
- Using a thermometer to measure the length of an object → Using a ruler to measure the length of an object Thermometers measure temperature, not distance. Always match the tool to what you're measuring.
- Looking through a magnifier held right against your eye → Holding the magnifier a few inches from your eye, moving it to focus Magnifiers work by bending light at the right distance; pressed to your eye, you see nothing.
- Guessing which tool to use instead of asking or checking the task requirements → Reading instructions and selecting the tool that matches the task and measurement needed Using the wrong tool wastes time and gives bad data. Always check what the task requires first.
