Definition

The systems scientists use to classify and name living things based on shared characteristics. Organisms are grouped into ranks such as kingdom, phylum, class, and species, which shows how they are related.

Worked examples

A domestic dog is classified as: Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Carnivora, Family Canidae, Genus Canis, Species Canis lupus familiaris.
Each rank groups the dog with organisms sharing more and more specific traits, from all animals down to this subspecies.
Humans (Homo sapiens) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) share Kingdom, Phylum, Class, and Order but differ at the Family level.
Shared higher ranks show close evolutionary relationship; divergence at lower ranks shows when lineages split.

Common mistakes

  • Species is the largest, most general rank in taxonomy.Kingdom is the largest rank; species is the smallest and most specific. Ranks go from broad (kingdom) to narrow (species), not the reverse.
  • Two organisms in the same phylum must also be in the same class.Same phylum means they share that rank, but they can belong to different classes within it. Higher ranks contain multiple lower ranks; sharing phylum does not force the same class.
  • Taxonomy is only about naming organisms, not showing relationships.Taxonomy both names and reveals evolutionary relationships through nested groupings. The hierarchy reflects how closely related organisms are by common ancestry.
