Definition
Major categories of plants based on shared features. Common groups include flowering plants, which reproduce using flowers and seeds, conifers, which bear cones, and non-seed plants such as ferns and mosses. Grouping plants makes their diversity easier to study.
Worked examples
A rose is a flowering plant — it makes flowers that become fruits with seeds inside.
Flowering plants reproduce with flowers and seeds, the largest and most diverse plant group.
A pine tree is a conifer — it produces cones that hold seeds, but never flowers.
Conifers use cones instead of flowers to reproduce and often have needle-like leaves.
A fern is a non-seed plant — it spreads through spores on the underside of its leaves.
Ferns and mosses reproduce with spores, not seeds, and need moisture to complete their life cycle.
Common mistakes
- All plants with green leaves are flowering plants. → Conifers, ferns, and mosses also have green leaves but do not produce flowers. Green leaves mean photosynthesis, not flowers — many plant groups photosynthesize without flowering.
- Moss and ferns have tiny seeds too small to see. → Mosses and ferns reproduce with spores, not seeds. Spores are single cells; seeds contain an embryo plant and stored food — completely different structures.
