Definition

The stages a plant passes through during its life, typically from seed to germination, growth, flowering, pollination, and seed production. The cycle then repeats as new seeds are dispersed and grow into new plants.

Worked examples

A bean seed germinates into a seedling, grows into a mature plant, flowers, is pollinated by bees, produces seed pods, and those seeds disperse to start new bean plants.
This complete cycle shows all key stages from seed through reproduction back to seed.
An apple tree flowers in spring, gets pollinated, grows fruit containing seeds in fall, and those seeds can grow into new apple trees.
Flowering plants produce seeds inside fruit; the cycle continues when seeds reach soil and germinate.

Common mistakes

  • All plants go through exactly the same life cycle stages in the same order.Different plant types have variations; some skip flowering or reproduce differently. Ferns use spores, not seeds. Mosses have a different two-stage cycle. The definition describes typical flowering plants.
  • Pollination and germination are the same stage.Pollination helps form seeds; germination is when a seed sprouts into a new plant. Pollination happens during reproduction in the mature plant. Germination starts the next generation's growth.
