Definition
The main structures of a plant and their functions. Roots anchor the plant and take in water and minerals, the stem carries water and holds the plant up, leaves make food using sunlight, and flowers produce seeds for reproduction.
Worked examples
A sunflower's roots grow deep into soil to absorb water, the tall stem transports it upward, broad leaves capture sunlight to make sugar, and the flower head produces hundreds of seeds.
Each part has a specific job that keeps the plant alive and helps it reproduce.
A cactus has shallow spreading roots to catch rare rain, a thick stem that stores water, small spines instead of leaves to reduce water loss, and colorful flowers that attract pollinators.

Common mistakes
- Stems only hold the plant upright → Stems transport water and nutrients AND provide support Students forget that stems are the plant's transport highway between roots and leaves.
- All plants must have flowers → Only flowering plants have flowers; ferns and mosses reproduce differently Flowers are one way to reproduce, but not all plant groups use them.
- Leaves absorb water from the air → Roots absorb water from soil; leaves make food and release water vapor Water enters through roots, not leaves. Leaves actually lose water through tiny pores.
