Definition
The ways plants react to their surroundings. Plants grow toward light, their roots grow downward in response to gravity, and some plants respond to touch or the changing seasons. These responses help plants survive even though they cannot move from place to place.
Worked examples
A houseplant on a windowsill bends its stem and leaves toward the sunlight streaming through the glass.
This is phototropism — the plant grows toward light to maximize photosynthesis for energy.
A Venus flytrap's leaves snap shut when an insect touches the tiny hairs inside the trap.
This is thigmotropism — the plant responds to touch to capture food in nutrient-poor soil.
A tree's roots always grow downward into the soil, no matter which way you plant the seed.
This is gravitropism — roots respond to gravity to anchor the plant and reach water.
Common mistakes
