Definition
A feature or behaviour that improves an organism's chance of surviving and reproducing in its environment. Adaptations develop over many generations through natural selection, such as a polar bear's thick fur or a cactus's water-storing stem.
Worked examples
A polar bear's thick white fur keeps it warm in Arctic temperatures and camouflages it against snow when hunting seals.
Both insulation and camouflage are adaptations that help the bear survive and catch prey in its icy environment.
A cactus has a shallow, wide root system to quickly absorb rare desert rain and a thick stem that stores water for drought.
These structural adaptations let the cactus live where water is scarce by maximizing collection and minimizing loss.
Owls have large forward-facing eyes and silent flight feathers, allowing them to hunt small mammals at night.
Sharp night vision and quiet flight are behavioral and structural adaptations for nocturnal predation.
Common mistakes
- A giraffe stretched its neck to reach leaves, so its offspring inherited the longer neck. → Giraffes with naturally longer necks survived better and reproduced, passing genes to the next generation. Adaptations arise through natural selection over many generations, not by individuals changing during their lifetime.
- Any trait an organism has is an adaptation. → Only traits that improve survival or reproduction in a specific environment are adaptations. Not all features are adaptations—some are neutral or byproducts; adaptations must provide a survival or reproductive advantage.
