Definition

Physical or behavioural features that help an animal survive and reproduce in its environment. Physical adaptations include camouflage, thick fur, or sharp claws, while behavioural adaptations include migration and hibernation.

Worked examples

A polar bear's thick white fur insulates against Arctic cold and provides camouflage on snow and ice.
Two physical adaptations working together help the polar bear survive in its freezing habitat.
Monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles south each fall to escape winter cold.
This behavioural adaptation lets monarchs avoid deadly temperatures they cannot survive.
A cactus wren nests inside spiny cacti, using the sharp spines as protection from predators.
The wren's nesting behaviour is an adaptation that takes advantage of its desert environment.

Common mistakes

  • Animals choose adaptations they need, like a giraffe stretching its neck to reach leaves.Adaptations arise through natural selection over many generations, not individual choice. Individuals are born with traits; populations evolve adaptations when helpful traits are passed on.
  • Only physical features like claws or fur count as adaptations.Both physical traits and behaviours (migration, hunting strategies) are adaptations. Behavioural adaptations are just as important for survival as physical ones.
  • All members of a species have identical adaptations.Variation exists; adaptations are common traits that help most individuals survive. Individual differences provide the raw material for future adaptation through natural selection.
