Definition
Physical features of an organism's body that improve its chances of survival, such as a camel's hump, a bird's beak shape, or a cactus's spines. These features develop over generations through natural selection.
Worked examples
A polar bear's thick white fur insulates against Arctic cold and camouflages it against snow when hunting seals.
Two structural features — fur thickness and color — directly improve survival in a specific environment.
A woodpecker's chisel-shaped beak and shock-absorbing skull let it drill into bark to find insects other birds cannot reach.
Beak shape and skull structure are physical adaptations that give access to a unique food source.
Cacti have spines (modified leaves) that reduce water loss and deter herbivores in desert habitats.
The spine structure serves two survival functions: conserving water and providing defense.
Common mistakes
- A bird learning to crack seeds with its beak is a structural adaptation. → Structural adaptations are inherited physical features, not learned behaviors. Learning is a behavioral adaptation; structural adaptations are body features passed through genes over generations.
- An organism develops a structural adaptation during its own lifetime in response to need. → Structural adaptations arise through natural selection across many generations. Individual organisms do not change their body structures; favorable traits become more common in populations over time.
- All members of a species have identical structural adaptations. → Variation exists; natural selection favors traits that improve survival in a given environment. Genetic variation within populations is the raw material for natural selection to act upon.
