Definition
Different kinds of natural environments that support particular communities of living things, such as forests, deserts, wetlands, grasslands, and oceans. Each habitat has its own climate, soil, and resources, which determine the plants and animals that can live there.
Worked examples
A coral reef in the Pacific Ocean supports clownfish, sea anemones, and algae in warm, salty water with plenty of sunlight.
Ocean habitats provide specific conditions—temperature, salinity, light—that determine which organisms thrive there.
The Sonoran Desert has cacti, roadrunners, and lizards adapted to extreme heat, little rainfall, and sandy soil.
Desert habitats feature low water availability and high temperatures, selecting for drought-resistant species.

Common mistakes
