Definition
The grouping of plants according to shared characteristics, such as whether they produce flowers, seeds, or cones. Scientists use features like leaf shape, reproduction method, and structure to sort plants into categories such as flowering plants, conifers, ferns, and mosses.
Worked examples
A rose produces flowers with petals and seeds inside fruit, so it belongs to the flowering plant group.
Flowering plants are identified by their flowers and seeds enclosed in fruit.
A pine tree produces seeds in cones and has needle-like leaves, classifying it as a conifer.
Conifers are recognized by their cones, needles or scales, and exposed seeds.
A fern has no flowers or seeds but reproduces with spores on the underside of its leaves.
Ferns are classified by their lack of seeds and use of spores for reproduction.
Common mistakes
- All green plants with leaves are flowering plants → Plants are classified by reproduction method, not just having leaves Ferns, mosses, and conifers all have green parts but belong to different groups based on how they reproduce.
- Conifers and flowering plants are the same because both make seeds → Conifers have exposed seeds in cones; flowering plants have seeds inside fruit The way seeds are protected and dispersed is a key difference between these two major plant groups.
