Definition

The grouping of animals based on shared traits such as body structure, how they reproduce, and whether they have a backbone. Major groups include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. Classification helps scientists study relationships among species.

Worked examples

A dolphin is a mammal: it has a backbone, breathes air with lungs, gives live birth, and nurses its young with milk.
Multiple shared traits place dolphins in the mammal group, despite living in water.
A frog is an amphibian: it has a backbone, moist skin, lays eggs in water, and lives both on land and in water as an adult.
Life cycle and habitat traits distinguish amphibians from other vertebrate groups.
A jellyfish is an invertebrate: it has no backbone or internal skeleton, only soft tissue and a gelatinous body.

Common mistakes

  • Whales are fish because they live in the ocean.Whales are mammals — they breathe air, give live birth, and produce milk. Classification is based on body structure and reproduction, not just habitat.
  • All animals with backbones are mammals.Vertebrates include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Having a backbone makes an animal a vertebrate, but there are five distinct vertebrate classes.
