Definition

Major categories of animals based on shared characteristics. Vertebrates—mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish—have backbones, while invertebrates such as insects and worms do not. Each group shares features in body structure and life processes.

Worked examples

A goldfish breathes through gills, has scales, and lays eggs in water — it is a fish.
Fish are vertebrates with gills, fins, and scales that live in water.
A spider has eight legs, no backbone, and an exoskeleton — it is an invertebrate (arthropod).
Invertebrates lack backbones; insects, spiders, and worms are all invertebrates.
A frog starts as a tadpole in water, then develops lungs and legs to live on land — it is an amphibian.
Amphibians are vertebrates that typically undergo metamorphosis and live in both water and on land.

Common mistakes

  • All animals with legs are vertebrates.Insects and spiders have legs but are invertebrates. Having legs does not mean an animal has a backbone; insects are invertebrates with six legs.
  • Whales and dolphins are fish because they live in water.Whales and dolphins are mammals — they breathe air and nurse their young. Habitat alone does not determine the group; body structure and life processes do.
  • All vertebrates lay eggs.Most mammals give live birth; only a few (like platypuses) lay eggs. Vertebrate groups vary in reproduction; mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish each have different patterns.
