Definition

A form of energy carried by vibrations that travel as waves through a medium such as air, water, or solids. Sound energy is produced when objects vibrate and is detected by our ears as sound.

Worked examples

A drum vibrates when struck, creating sound waves that travel through air to your ears.
The drum's vibration produces sound energy that moves through the air medium as waves.
A guitar string vibrating at \(440\) Hz produces the musical note A.
Faster vibrations create higher-pitched sounds; the frequency determines the pitch you hear.

Common mistakes

  • Sound energy can travel through a vacuum (empty space).Sound energy requires a medium like air, water, or solids to travel. Without particles to vibrate, sound waves cannot propagate—space is silent.
  • Sound and light are the same type of energy because both travel in waves.Sound is mechanical energy needing a medium; light is electromagnetic and travels through vacuums. Sound waves need matter to vibrate; light waves do not.
  • Louder sounds travel faster than quieter sounds.Sound speed depends on the medium, not the volume; loudness is amplitude, not speed. In the same medium at the same temperature, all sounds travel at the same speed.
